iPhone 5 To Have A Smaller Than 4” Screen With A Metal Back

8/31/2011 09:15:00 AM - 0 comments
New reports have suggested that the upcoming iPhone 5 will have a slightly larger screen than the iPhone 4 and edge to edge display which is going to be achieved by slimming down the panel’s bezel.

This latest report comes from DigiTimes which cite upstream panel supplier which have supposedly revealed that the iPhone 5’s panel size will be less than 4”. This could mean a 3.7” display which will be achieved by ensuring that the bezel is as thin as possible. This could actually make the next generation iPhone’s display an edge to edge one.

Another thing that this report points to is that the back could be made out of metal instead of glass.

This all comes despite rumors that the iPhone 5 will feature a 4.2 inch panel as sources from upstream panel suppliers have revealed that the iPhone 5’s panel size will still be less than 4 inches. In addition to this, the iPhone 5’s back design is being changed to a metal chassis instead of reinforced glasses.

As usual, there is no way to confirm this report until Apple actually announced the next generation iPhone but rumors of a larger screened iPhone have been doing the rounds for quite some time.

In other iPhone 5 news, there are reports that the iPhone 5 will be made available on Sprint and T-mobile which is great. This will really help to strengthen Apple’s position against Android smartphones. The iPhone 5 is expected to be announced shortly and it’s official release will be late September or October.

Have You Got A Smart Cover For Your iPad 2?

8/29/2011 09:13:00 AM - 0 comments
Apple introduced the Smart Cover back in March along with the iPad 2. The Smart Cover allows you to keep your tablet clean and safe while also helping to preserve battery life. It does this by putting your iPad 2 into an instant sleep.

What we all want to know is, if the cover could also double as a charging accessory which will give the iPad a surge of power when you start getting those battery warnings in the middle of an important task. This really would make a great future product if Cupertino decided to do it.

If it sounds like something you would like then the good news is that the cheap electronics brigade has come up with something which theoretically could just work. This will set you back just $38 and is being called Anytone Smart Cover Power For iPad 2. This product attaches to your smart cover and claims to give you an additional 4 hours of battery life.

This paneled device could be made much better and instead of just one panel with a battery cell they could have added a battery cell to each of the four panels which would give you an additional 16 hours of battery power. The appearance of this might not appeal to everyone and those who like the slickness of the iPad might not want to go for this one. For all those who regularly run out of battery this sort of battery pack could be just the thing they have been looking for.

The only problem that we see with this battery pack is the cost and you usually do get what you pay for. If you have paid 800 dollars or more for your iPad would you really want to plug this specific device into it? The potential damage risk of a cheap add on such as this could be huge. Our advice would be to wait for a reputable manufacturer to come up with a more reliable product. You probably won’t have to wait too long either because now that a cheap device has been created and is causing a lot of talk the big manufactures will be keen to cash in.

ToDoNotes For iPhone and iPad

8/26/2011 09:17:00 AM - 0 comments
The developers at Cydia have been going all out over the past couple of month. Thanks to the JailbreakMe exploit there are now thousands of additional people searching the Cydia store each month for great apps for their jailbroken iPhones.

The Tweak Week Challenge was introduced back in June and has been a great success. Each week one developer takes the helm and releases one app a day for seven days. It has really brought out some of the best and useful tweaks for the millions of jailbroken iDevice users.

During the Tweak Week a new and very handy app called ToDoNotes was introduced. This app is great and the ToDoList is really accessible just like having a pen and notepad in your pocket at all times. The Spotlight search part of this app also helps you to locate applications really quickly. You can add your ToDoList to Spotlight which really does give you a reason to use it. It is a very good free alternative to many of the pricey apps on the App Store.

This app is very useful and it is similar to the Sticky Notes feature in Windows 7. It is very easy to use and all you have to do is tap on the little envelope and toggle in the Notes app and select push to ToDoNotes.

In order to use this great app you will need to have a jailbroken iPhone and there are plenty of ways in which you can do this depending on the version of iOS you are using. ToDoNotes is a free tweak that is available over at the BigBoss repo so be sure to check it out.

iPhone 5 Coming on Sprint in October

8/24/2011 09:15:00 AM - 0 comments
According to the Wall Street Journal reports the upcoming iPhone 5 will launch on Sprint Nexel in October of this year. This is big news for Sprint and since the announcement the stocks for this company have also increased. Sprint could actually be a key factor in things as Apple looks to remove the luxury product label it has so that they can reach a larger share of the market.

The iPhone market has been inaccessible to a lot of people and the only carriers that were selling Apple’s smartphone were AT&T and Verizon. Now that Apple have a third network on board, as well as a cheaper 8GB iPhone it will certainly give more people the opportunity to buy an iPhone.

This year’s launch is expected to make the biggest impact on the mobile telecoms market today even though it is a little later than previous years. Sprint have posted the highest increase in subscribers in the fiscal year leading up to the end of Q1 of 2011 and will be looking to capitalize on the popularity of Apple’s market leading devices come October.

The launch is getting very close now and rumors are constantly circulating. We are not certain that Apple will launch two new iPhones in October. Smaller prices and a better choice of networks is sure to enhance sales and it is expected that the next array of iPhones will be the most successful to date.

If you don’t already own an iDevice the addition of Sprint as a network carrier, will give you more choice when it comes to making your purchase.

Jailbreak iOS 5 Beta 6 Using Redsn0w 0.9.8b6

8/22/2011 09:13:00 AM - 0 comments
Apple has just released iOS Beta 6 so if you have jailbroken this version using Redsn0w 0.9.8b5 you may have noticed some stability issues. Thankfully all these issues have now been resolved and Redsn0w 0.9.8b6 has been released.

This new release of Redsn0w, according to MuscleNerd shouldn’t be too far from the final 0.9.8 release which will be released once the final version of iOS 5 is released. MuscleNerd is a well known member of the iOS jailbreaking community that have been developing Redsn0w over the years.

The iPhone Dev-Team Blog had this to say: We’ve released redsn0w 0.9.8b6 to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 6 (point it directly at the beta 6 IPSW). Two important notes about this version: 1. Please let your device boot normally to iOS 5 beta 6 and do a clean shutdown before jailbreaking. 2. Boot logos have intentionally been disabled for now, so you’ll see a black screen on tethered boots (you can re-enable logos or verbose boot with command-line options if you really want them back).

Due to increased sensitivity to abrupt file system shutdowns in iOS 5 beta 6, it is very important that you do a clean shutdown before running redsn0w. The previous version of Redsn0w functioned with iOS 5 beta 6, some users reported several stability issues with jailbroken devices on a daily basis. If you have already jailbroken your beta 6 device with Redsn0w you might want to re-jailbreak it by restoring it through iTunes and then running Redsn0w 0.9.8b6 again. There are no visual changes in this new version but it will fix any stability issues you might have experienced.

This update is simply aimed at fixing bugs. It is still a tethered jailbreak and it does not make any advancement towards an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak. It is unlikely that an untethered jailbreak will make an appearance until the final version if iOS 5 is released.

This version of Redsn0w is aimed at developers who are using the iOS 5 beta.

Jailbreak iOS 5 Beta 5 Using Sn0wbreeze 2.8 For Windows

8/19/2011 02:07:00 PM - 0 comments
iOS 5 Beta 5 was released just over 2 weeks ago and already it has been jailbroken. This can be done using Redsn0w. Now users can also jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5 using Sn0wbreeze thanks to a new version that was released earlier this week.

Sn0wbreeze version 2.8 beta 5 was announced earlier this week by iH8sn0w in a statement on Pastie. This is a website that is often used to share code between developers. The main things for users is that they will be able to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5 and they will be able to save and create custom jailbroken ISW firmware files. They can also create custom packages and change the boot screen logo and later use this on any supported devices.

Once users have obtained a modified IPSW file they can simple restore it using iTunes with their device in DFU mode. All the instructions on how to do this are provided by the tool itself which is great.

One thing that must be pointed out, is the fact that this is a tethered jailbreak and this means that users have to plug their devices into their PC’s every time it loses power or restarts. Users also have to run iBooty which is included in the Sn0wbreeze package every time the device is powered on. This may sound painful but it is the best way to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5 at the moment and there doesn’t seem to be any untethered jailbreak solution in the pipeline that is going to be offered any time soon. The untethered jailbreak is not expected to make an appearance until the final version of iOS 5 is officially released this fall.

This jailbreak method won’t work on the iPad 2 or the iPhone 3GS with the old baseband but it should work perfectly with all other devices.

Skype WiFi Lets You Use Your Skype Credit In WiFi Hotspots

8/17/2011 09:02:00 AM - 0 comments
Skype seems to be constantly in the news since they were acquired by Microsoft. It seems they are trying to turn Skype into a real money spinner and by the looks of things they really are going in the right direction. Skype is being incorporated into everything at the moment and the latest is the introduction of Skype WiFi which allows users to access their Skype credit in WiFi hotspots.

Skype has been integrated with Facebook and it is also available for the iPad too. The latest release sees Skype using a WiFi finder app that can be used with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Users can pay for usage on WiFi hotspots using Skype credits and let’s face it, the prices are going to be hard for people to ignore.

Some mobile providers do offer a decent amount of data allowance while others are very restricted and these means that smartphone users do use WiFi hotspots whenever they can. With the new Skype WiFi feature, uses can use their Skype credits and they also get unlimited data. For promotional purposes, this service is going to be offered free of charge from Saturday the 20th of August through to Sunday the 21st of August. There is a free limit applied of one hour before you will need to add funds to your account.

If promoted correctly, this could be really useful to people and it really will save people a lot of money if they just want to check emails or see what is happening on Facebook. Skype WiFi for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch can be downloaded via the iTunes Store so be sure to check it out this weekend for free.

iPhone 5 Screens Being Produced By Wintek?

8/15/2011 12:59:00 PM - 0 comments
Some leaked images have surfaced giving rise to speculation that the people over at Wintek could actually be producing iPhone 5 screens. Winteck were the people who mass produced the screen for the iPhone 4 so could this be true?

The leaked images that were taken were a little blurry and distant but the designs that were photographed were very much in keeping with various other rumors and leaks that we have seen over the past couple of months. In these photos we can see that the reports of the elongated homescreen button might just be true which is great.

The screen in these pictures also looks to be wider than the iPhone 4’s so again this is good in terms of display measurements. With the iOS 5 almost here it makes perfect sense that more space is added on the screen of the new iPhone to leave more space for the more advanced operating system to display everything that needs to be displayed.

These pictures don’t confirm that Wintek are making screens for the iPhone 5. They could be making screens for any of the touchscreen smartphones on the market today or those due for release in the near future. These pictures do of course look a lot like the leaked iPhone 5.

Apple will of course be producing stuff now to get ready for their September/October deadline and if these pictures are to be believed then the changes look pretty good so far. You can view these pictures over at MIC Gadget http://micgadget.com/14738/is-wintek-producing-the-iphone-5-screen-right-now/

BadgeClear Allows You To Clear App Notifications Immediately

8/12/2011 09:32:00 AM - 0 comments

The notification system that was introduced by Apple has cause a lot of uproar with iOS users with their notification badges. These notification badges do serve a purpose and they tell us how many things have happened the only problem is that they can be annoying to get rid of because you have to open each app and mark the notifications as read.

This can be very time consuming and it would make things so much easier if you could just clear all the app notification badges. There is a jailbreak tweak that will allow you to do just this and it is called BadgeClear. BadgeClear can be installed via Cydia and once installed tapping and holding the icon will make it jiggle and then all you have to is tap on it and it will clear all your notification badges.

Once BadgeClear has cleared all your notifications a popup will appear to confirm that your notifications have been cleared successfully. BadgeClear is available to download and costs just $0.99 under the BigBoss repo. This is a small price to pay but if notification badges are annoying you and taking up too much of time to clear then this could be the answer to your problems. Remember you will have to have a jailbroken iDevice to make use of the BadgeClear app.

Finding And Sharing Direct Links For Cydia Apps With Different iOS Devices

8/10/2011 09:30:00 AM - 0 comments

With the Apple App Store whenever you come across a real gem you can share it very easily with your friends. All you have to do is send your friends a URL and that’s it. They can enjoy the great App that you have discovered. With so many Apps on the App Store having the ability to share them so easily is a great advantage.

If you have a jailbroken iDevice and you use the Cydia App Store you can use a couple of tweaks that will allow you to share apps directly with your friends too. It isn’t as easy as the Apple App Store sharing method but if you want to do it you can.

The first thing you need to have of course is a jailbroken iDevice. After that you need to start Cydia and find the package you want to share. The full list of your installed Cydia applications can be found under the Manage icon and then selecting packages. The next thing you have to do is tap on your selection to proceed to the details screen. At the top you will see an option to Change Package Settings. You need to tap and hold this option and it will bring up a menu asking whether you wish to open or copy the package and then select copy.

Now you will have a direct link to the application and you can then send it to friends and they will be able to find your recommendation right away. It is a great way to share you app finds with your friends. You do have to make sure that the other device that you wish to send your links to has the source from which you found the package otherwise they won’t be able to locate it.

Skype For iPad Now Here

8/05/2011 09:08:00 AM - 0 comments

Skype have officially launched an iPad optimized version of their app on the App Store. A week or so ago you may have seen a demo video that showcased Skype for iPad and although many though it was a fake it seems that this really was the official version of their iPad ready app.

The iPad optimized version of the Skype app is called Skype for iPad and it works over WiFi as well as 3G and it comes with all the features that come with their latest iPhone app which include Video chat, voice chat, text only chat and more. Users also have the ability to use Skype credits for calling landlines and cell phones too.

The Video chat feature of the Skype for iPad app is only for those with an iPad 2 because of its dual cameras so if you have a first generation iPad you will have to settle for receiving video only. As with all Skype clients you can send and receive video to everyone on skype no matter what type of platform they are using.

When you install the Skype for iPad app if you already have a Skype account your contacts will automatically be there on your iPad when you login. You can call, video or instant message any of your contacts and flick through recent calls and instant messages using the Skype for iPad history feature.

This app works with iPad on iOS 4.0 and above and it is available free from the App Store.

Knockoff iPhone 5 Emerges In China

8/03/2011 09:06:00 AM - 0 comments

The schematics of the iPhone 5 were leaked a couple of days ago and apparently the people from Shenzhen have created a knockoff iPhone 5 design already. Can you believe it, after only a couple of days these guys have managed to replicate the design and have released a knockoff model of what should be the next generation iPhone.

China is known for producing plenty of knockoff gadgets and the city of Shenzhen has now replicated the new iPhone 5. This may sound like great news to many but what you have to remember is that although they may produce a lot of fake gadgets, they come with terrible software so be warned.

According to many reports the iPhone 5 is due to be released later this year but it seems that Shenzhen couldn’t wait. According to GizChina.com the model that they have replicated does seem to follow the shape of the leaked iPhone 5 case designs and looks very similar to the leaked schematics which feature a curved design with the overall look being very similar to that of an iPhone 3GS.

The knockoff product does help people to visualize what the finished product will look like and according to rumors the new iPhone 5 will have a thinner profile, a larger screen and a larger home button. You can buy the knockoff iPhone with 64GB of memory and a java based OS for approximately $108.

If you want the real thing however we suggest that you wait until the official launch of Apple’s next generation iPhone which should be available in September or early October of this year.

Next Apple iPhone To Launch In October

8/01/2011 12:04:00 PM - 0 comments

There were previous reports that the new iPhone would be launched in September of this year but according to a new report that has just come out, the next generation iPhone will actually debut in October.

The report came from John Paczkowski of All Things D and he stated that according to his sources the next iPhone whether it be the iPhone 4S or the iPhone 5 will launch sometime in October of this year and not September as was previously thought. On the website All Things D you can read all about it and why the date has been changed from September to October.

With so many different reports circulating and rumored dates of September and October it really is getting very hard to predict when Apple will unveil the next generation iPhone and like most people out there I guess we really going to have to wait and that wait could be an additional 30 days if these new reports are to be believed.

We don’t even know for sure about the design of the next model as there are contradicting reports surrounding this too. Some say that the next iPhone will have an iPhone 4 like design whilst others suggest that the next generation iPhone will have a tapered curved design.

Again it is all really just speculation and until Apple decides to put us all out of our misery and unveil the product no one can be certain for sure. So whether it will be a September launch or an October launch no one really can say for sure all we can say is that the next generation iPhone will be launched sometime this year. If there are any further developments on this story we will be sure to let you know.
