iOS 5 To Have Widgets And New Notification System

5/30/2011 09:53:00 AM - 0 comments

According to the latest report just in, iOS 5 is going to have a new notification system and widgets that will be available on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. This report comes just weeks before the WWDC which is Apple’s yearly developer conference.

According to different sources iOS 5 is going to have a complete rework of the existing iOS notification system as well as widgets. Apple has reportedly offered to fly British media to the event and of course they probably wouldn’t do this unless this WWDC was going to be something big.

There are speculations that the next generation iPhone could be announced but then again, Apple has marketed this year’s event as a software only conference. We do know for certain that there will be an announcement related to Mac OS X Lion and Apple has promised to release this during the Summer.

That really only leaves iOS and many expect to see iOS 5 being announced. If reports are correct and the notification system is to be upgraded then this is good news. As for widgets, it really is hard to predict how these will be implemented into the iOS interface which is mostly app dominated. It could mean that a real re-working of the system’s interface is going to take place but as always we really do have to wait until WWDC to find out exactly what Apple are proposing.

iPhone 5 To Have A Curved Glass Screen

5/27/2011 10:59:00 AM - 0 comments

There are some new reports circulating that are talking about the next generation iPhone which could possibly be the long awaited iPhone 5 and the fact that it could be getting a curved glass screen. This report comes after Apple reportedly purchased 200 to 300 glass cutting machines.

If reports are true, the iPhone 5 wouldn’t be the first curved glass device that Apple has made. In 2009 the iPod Nano was introduced with a similar type of screen. Even so, this would be the very first iPhone to have a curved glass screen if reports are true.

There have been a lot of iPhone 5 rumours over the past couple of months and these have included improvements in the camera quality, a large 4” screen and more. A couple of weeks ago it was reported that there probably wouldn’t be a major redesign on the next iPhone and that it might even be called the iPhone 4S and not the iPhone 5. These new reports have now led people to believe that the next iPhone will in fact be the iPhone 5 but as yet there is still no evidence to support this.

These new reports in no way disprove the rumours that the iPhone 5 has been delayed until next year and that we might actually see a slightly improved version of the iPhone 4 in the next couple of month. All these reports suggest is that Apple might be developing prototypes for internal use or getting suppliers ready for the possibility of an iPhone with a curved screen.

Speed Up YouTube Streaming Thanks To TCP Optimizer

5/25/2011 09:57:00 AM - 0 comments

If you are frustrated by the speed of streaming YouTube videos then I have great news for you today. Now you can speed up YouTube streaming on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch thanks to TCP Optimizer which is a new Cydia tweak.

TCP Optimizer is available free of charge but you do have to have a jailbroken iDevice to be able to use it as it is a Cydia Tweak. Once you download TCP Optimizer from Cydia and refreshing your sources you should see it on the packages listings. This new tweak should take effect straight away without having to restart your device and you should be able to watch YouTube videos at decent speeds.

The TCP optimizer modifies a few settings inside the iOS and it allows a maximum of 16 un-ACK’d packets instead of 8 and it also sets the default package size to 1460 instead of 512. Not only will these changes speed up YouTube videos, they will also improve the overall internet performances of your iDevice.

TCP Optimizer will work with any iPhone or iPad that is running iOS 3.1.2 or above. If you have any issues the app can also be uninstalled without leaving any traces behind. Remember you do need to have a jailbroken iDevice to use this app.

Stop People Seeing What You Are Doing On Your iPhone

5/23/2011 10:55:00 AM - 0 comments

Apple is looking to get a patent that will stop people from seeing what you are doing on your iPhone screen. They submitted a patent that will introduce a way to ensure that you retain your privacy on your portable devices. They plan on doing this by making the contents of your screen invisible to anyone who is not looking vertically at your device.

This new Apple patent will work by steering light in a particular angel as opposed to emitting it in all directions which is what happens with idevices now. This sounds like a great idea especially if you want to stop people glancing at what you are doing on your iPhone. This patent includes systems and methods for electronically controlling the viewing angle of the display using liquid crystal optical elements.

The patent also goes on to explain how this new feature might be implemented and there could even be an option to change the viewing angel and possible turning off this privacy mode so that all users will have flexibility on how and when they would like to use this feature. It’s not fully clear how this feature will work and if it will even be a success but it really does sound promising to say the least and being able to control privacy on your iPhone is something that a lot of people would be interested in. What do you think about this? Would you use this new privacy mode if it were built into your iPhone?

Apple Makes Guinness World Records For The iPhone 4

5/20/2011 09:27:00 AM - 0 comments

Apple has been awarded Guinness World Records for the iPhone 4, App Store and iOS games. The iPhone 4 has been awarded a record for being the fastest ever selling mobile gaming hardware ever after selling 1.5 million handsets on their launch day.

These figures are really impressive especially when compared with other hardware numbers. The PSP only managed 200,000 on launch day and it took the Nintendo DS a week to sell 500,000 units.

Apple’s App Store also made it into the records and it has seen over 6.5 billion downloads since it launched in July of 2008. As of September 2010 there were 37,362 games in the App Store and this is a lot more than the Xbox Live Arcade which stands at 1,300. With just 145 games available on launch of the App Store Apple also received a record for the largest launch lineup. Angry Birds was the top selling iOS game with 6.5 million downloads since it launched in December 2009 and Plants Vs Zombies is the highest grossing iPod/iPhone strategy games after it made $1 million in its first week of sales.

This really is great news for Apple and it makes you wonder what records they will break next.

The Next iPhone to Be The iPhone 4S

5/18/2011 09:25:00 AM - 0 comments

A new report has just been issued that is claiming that Apple’s next iPhone is to be called the iPhone 4S and it will have some minor cosmetic changes. This is instead of going straight to the iPhone 5 as many of us were expecting.

The report comes from Peter Misek who has stated that the iPhone 4S will include the dual core A5 CPU just like the iPad 2 and that it will also have improved cameras both back and front. There will also be HSPA+ support but not much is to change cosmetically.

Misek has also stated that the iPhone 4S is going to incorporate radios that will make this handset compatible with Sprint and T-Mobile in the US and the handset will also be available to China Mobile.

Misek has also reported that Apple had intended to go for the 4G jugular with the iPhone 4S but the hardware just wasn’t ready yet and this is the reason for the modest model update for this year. There are reports of multiple prototypes being tested and this has been something that has been circulated for quite some time now but it may be possible that Apple has decided against the 4G iPhone.

Leaked reports have of course been wrong before and there is absolutely no reason to believe that this report is true either. Apple have wanted 4G in their next iPhone even those real 4G is not available by carriers just yet so I guess we will have to wait and see exactly what will happen and wait for any further updates on this story.

Third Rail iPhone 4 Case A Big Hit

5/16/2011 09:07:00 AM - 0 comments

Since the launch of the iPhone 4 one of the main complaints has been the closed case design and the lack of user serviceable batteries. There have been quite a lot of cases come of the market with inbuilt power supplies that can extend the life of the iPhone battery but these cases have been very bulky and not what people wanted to see.

Third Rail have just released a brand new case and smart battery. This is a two part system that offers the best of both worlds. You get a slim iPhone 4 case that comes with an attachable battery pack if you need a little bit more power.

The Third Rail iPhone 4 case kit costs $90 and for this you get one case and one battery. You can buy additional batteries for just $40 each. If you do buy more batteries you have the capability of stacking them to create a power hub or charge them all at the same time. This excellent case kit has a slide on smart battery and this is great because you can add extra power when you need it and then remove it when you don’t.

The slim case that you get is sleek and it comes with a high quality protective case that has a soft touch feel. The smart battery that you get with this kit can also be used as a standalone backup battery that you can use to power other devices via the USB adapter that is also included. This is a fantastic idea especially when you consider how many devices people carry around today.

The Third Rail system seems to be a big hit so far and if you are looking for a slim line iPhone 4 case and some additional power when needed then this really is the perfect choice.

iPhone 3GS Still A Great Seller When Compared To The Android

5/13/2011 09:14:00 AM - 0 comments

The iPhone 3GS has been available for nearly two years now and according to reports it is still a great seller especially when compared to the Android phone. In fact, the iPhone 3GS is still outselling some of the new Android handsets.

Statistics from Cannacord Genuity’s Michael Walkley showed that both the iPhone 3GS and the original iPad are currently outselling a lot of the newer competition. After looking at both the AT&T and Verizon sales for the month of April it was clear that the iPhone 3GS was still a strong seller for AT&T and with it’s $49 price tag it actually outsold the HTC Inspire and the Motorola Atrix. Verizon’s iPad sales showed that the first generation in this device sold out in less than two weeks in both the 16GB and 32BG models.

What these statistics show is that even though the Android is growing it is actually taking market share away from the Windows Phone 7 and the BlackBerry more so than that iPhone and checks with stores also found this to be true. The iPhone is expected to remain the number one selling handset at Verizon for 2011.

Walkley’s report also showed that that iPad was by far the highest selling tablet with RIM’s PlayBook and Motorola’s Xoom seeing only modest sales. It really does go to show that even though there is competition Apple’s idevices seem to be the most popular choice in the consumer market today. What do you think, would Apple be your choice?

What’s New With The White iPhone 4

5/11/2011 09:12:00 AM - 0 comments

When the white iPhone 4 was announced last year and then delayed it was thought to be related to an issue with the white colouring working with a couple of key parts of the handset. The main issue being the proximity sensor. Now that the white iPhone has been officially launched let’s take a look at exactly what is different when compared to the first run handset.

The comparisons between the models clearly show that the new white iPhone 4 has had a design makeover. The proximity sensor has been redesigned and is now located just below the earpiece. There were reports that suggested that Apple had been struggling to make the senor work correctly when it sat behind the white plastic. This new fix is to have it covered with black plastic and in our opinion it does look a lot better than the original plan to have a grid of holes.

The new white iPhone has also had its camera changed. In the new white iPhone the camera protrudes slightly from the back plate whereas with all other iPhone models it sits flush. This is a great idea and it ties in with an issue that modders have been having when trying to use 3rd party plates on their iPhones. There have been reports of photos having weird color affects and appearing blurred and washed out. It looks like Apple have tried to fix this problem with the new white iPhone.

There really aren’t that many differences so it begs the question as to why it took Apple so long to release the white iPhone 4 doesn’t it?

Public Developer Preview of iOS 5 To Arrive Shortly As Apple Being Testing

5/06/2011 09:32:00 AM - 0 comments

As we all know, the new iOS 5 which Apple is currently working on is set to bring some really great new features and it seems that developers are really starting to get excited. This new iOS 5 software will have a new notification system and if reports are anything to go by Apple have begun widespread testing.

Application developers have begun to see the next iOS version showing up in their stats that they receive from Apple and this is proof that they are starting their testing procedures. The image that is shown below which is from 9to5Mac shows the iOS is being tested on numerous devices including iPods, iPads and iPhones and this includes all versions even the iPhone 3GS.

Many people had assumed that the iPhone 3GS would be left out of future major iOS releases but this doesn’t seem to be the case and Apple are testing their new iOS version on the iPhone 3GS model too.

As the devices begin to show up in developer’s stats it leads to speculation that a public release in a matter of months could be on the cards and this will probably include various beta versions coming before the official release is seen. It is all good news though and we can’t wait to see the public release of the first iOS 5 beta to see exactly what Apple have in store.

The Challenge Is On To Jailbreak The iPad 2

5/04/2011 11:31:00 AM - 0 comments

This is hot news at the moment. It seems that well known hacker Geohot has accepted a challenge to jailbreak the new iPad 2. This challenge is to dump the iPad 2’s bootrom and it is going to be a race to see who can do this first.

The hacker who is currently working on the jailbreak for the iPad 2 is P0sixninja and according to his tweets he asked for more competition to see who could jailbreak the iPad 2 first. If his tweets are anything to go by, it seems that Geohot has accepted his challenge. Here is what P0sixninja tweeted:

@p0sixninja: I challenged geohot to dump the iPad 2 bootrom before me. Maybe having a worthy opponent will motivate me to work harder.

This was followed by:

@p0sixninja: He accepted, he said he didn’t have an iPad yet but he’s getting one really soon.

As you can see there is a competition on and we can’t wait to see who is the first to hack the iPad 2. Geohot is known for hacking iDevices and the news that he is going to try and jailbreak the iPad 2 is really going to excite the jailbreak community. Geohot was recently in the news after being sued by Sony for jailbreaking their PlayStation 3 console so it looks like he is enjoying the limelight and ready to jump back into it.

If you are waiting on a jailbreak for the new iPad 2 then this really is great news and hopefully the solution will come very soon too.

Apple Source Claims Two iPhone 5 Models Being Worked On By Apple

5/02/2011 09:18:00 AM - 0 comments

There have been so many different stories and rumors surrounding the iPhone 5 ever since the iPad 2 was announced. Some of these stories ask the question will the next iPhone be a complete redesign of the handset or will it just be more of the same with just new features added?

Well according to the iPhone Download Blog it seems that Apple is in fact ordering two sets of parts for the new iPhone 5 so this could be similar to the launch of the iPhone 3G/3GS. It seems that an Apple employee has leaked news that Apple is ordering these two sets and they continued by saying that one of these is cutting edge whilst the other is more conservative.

Now we all know that Apple won’t be mixing the two of these so it makes sense that Apple is in fact looking to bring two versions of the iPhone 5 to the market and this could perhaps be a pro version and a normal version.

This story has not been confirmed and it could be that the two sets of parts that are being ordered are for the new iPhone 5 and the new iPod touch. It is impossible to know at the moment but we must admit that the idea of a higher spec pro version iPhone 5 really does sound like a great idea and I’m sure there are plenty of people out there who will agree. What do you think; would you like to see two versions of the iPhone 5?
