This is not surprising at all. In just short span of time, Google’s Android platform has gone from zero presence in the smartphone market to the top contender. A new report form comScore and Nielsen, Google’s Android-based smartphones has dominated the tough US smartphone market. According to comScore, Android-based smartphones now form 31 percent of all smartphones in the US. The data collected over the three month period ending in January 2011 shows that Google’s Android OS surpassed RIM’s BlackBerry and Apple iOS for the first time. RIM comes in a close second and accumulated a 30.4 percent market share while Apple’s iPhone iOS follows at 24.7 percent. Rounding out the top five are Microsoft (8.0 percent) and Palm (3.2 percent).

On the other hand, Nielsen report is bit similar to comScore’s report. The report submitted by Nielsen suggests that Android powered smartphones accumulated approximately of 29 percent of all smartphones in the US. Then followed by RIM at 27 percent and Apple’s iOS is a close third – also at 27 percent.

Furthermore, comScore also reported that there are now more than 65 million US subscribers using smartphones, surge by at least 8 percent from the three month period leading up. However, Nielsen added that both RIM and Apple did a tremendous job in marketing and creating standalones smartphone platforms. We all know that BlackBerry is exclusive only on RIM’s devices and Apple’s iOS is on iOS devices only. Unlike Android, there are a lot of manufacturers carries Google’s high-end operating system. HTC held the top place with 12 percent share in that market, followed by Motorola with 10 percent, and Samsung with 5 percent.
