iPhones on Optus Now Unlocked

Optus has done something that no other network carrier have done before. They are now unlocking iPhones all over their network. Customers on Optus are now receiving text messages saying that their iPhones have been unlocked and telling them what they need to do.

Optus is now automatically unlocking customers iPhones to allow these devices to be used overseas. As you are probably aware, all iPhones before the iPhone 4 were locked to the carrier’s SIM card which meant that customers couldn’t use the device on any other network.

The SMS message that customers of Optus are receiving is:

"Your iPhone has been Network Unlocked, to complete; backup/restore via iTunes."

All customers are then given a website address where they can learn how to make sure that all their purchased apps, music and contacts are backup up during the iTunes process. This is a really brave move by Optus but it is making the news so it must be being received very well by customers.

According to Optus they are doing the automatic unlocking for their customers to save customers time and money by having to call them to unlock their phones. The unlock is going to allow all Optus customers to user their iPhones on any network and avoid roaming charges while they are overseas.

The network unlock option became a possibility and was only introduced with the last iPhone update from Apple and it looks like it is going to be a big hit with all Optus customers. I wonder how long it is going to take before more network operators start doing the same and unlocking customers iPhones so that they can use their phones on other networks when they are travelling.

An Optus spokesman said the carrier had embraced the network unlock option – a capability introduced in the last iPhone update from Apple – as a response to customer feedback as the Australian holiday season drew closer.
