iOS 4.3 To Have Subscriptions

The latest iOS release from Apple is rumoured to launch this Friday and according to speculation it will have an improved App store. The update to the iOS 4.3 will however come with new subscription based apps and this will mean that magazines and other publication will be able to charge monthly/weekly subscriptions fees for people who want to use their apps.

There is one magazine that most publications will be keeping an eye on and that is Sir Richard Branson’s iPad only magazine which is called The Project. If this is a success then we are sure to see a lot more magazines hitting the App Store.

Reports have been circulating for a number of days now that the official launch of iOS 4.3 will take place in December. This new update will include the usual maintenance tweaks and some bug fixes if any. The main thing that people are focusing on is the fact that the new iOS 4.3 is going to include subscription billing API’s.

A lot of magazines have stated that they will be bringing out new subscription based versions of their current apps before Christmas and Apple and News Corp are set to launch an iPad only newspaper in 2011. The Guardian newspaper in the UK revealed on their blog that they are working on a brand new iPhone app and it will cost users £2.99 for six months and £3.99 for 12 months.

This means that there is going to be a big change to the iOS as currently the iOS 4.2 only allows for single App payments. Apple is due to make an announcement on Thursday the 9th of December and this comes just days before the opening of the Mac App Store. I guess we will all just have to wait and see but it sounds like great news for the publishing industry doesn’t it?
