The Hertfordshire-based Apple iPad chip maker Imagination Technologies has made an announcement regarding its second largest US acquisition in a month. The Imagination Technology has inked a deal to acquire Caustic Graphics Inc for $ 27 million to offer high-quality 3D graphics for smartphones. The acquisition agreement comes less than a month after the company buy out the US-based HelloSoft For up to $47 million to enahance the company’s video and voice-over internet protocol products and expand its WiFi offering.

TThe US- based Caustic Graphics Inc. was known for developing real-time interactive 3Dimages using the revolutionary ray tracing graphics technology, that has a capability to bring high-quality, ultra clear, and photorealistic 3D graphics in the future iOS devices. There is huge possibility that the ray tracing technology could soon be applied in future iOS devices, such as iPhone 5 and iPad 2.

According to the company:

“Ray tracing is a key additional technology that traditionally has been regarded as the exclusive domain of specialized markets and non real-time applications. We intend to change that.”

“Our vision is to enable cinema quality computer graphics at new cost and power consumption design points. We are excited at the prospect of becoming part of the Imagination team as we bring ray tracing to a much broader base, and utilize their extensive resources and partnerships to bring our technology to every consumer screen.”

Currently, an Imagination Technologies graphics processor called PowerVR SGX is included in Apple’s custom A4 chip that powers the iPhone 4, iPad, iPod Touch, as well as the AppleTV 2G.
