It looks like that we will witness a new jailbreak scene. Our affiliate site, http://news.ziphone.org, reported yesterday that Apple’s 6th-generation iPod Nano was hacked by a hacker/developer named James Whelton. Developer Whelton successfully bypass the iPod Nano’s cache comparison and he also manage to create blank space with the installation of Springboard hack.
Despite the fact that Whelton has not yet jailbroken the device as well as there is no root access on the iPod Nano, there’s a huge possibility that users will be allowed to add games, movies, and calendars, and other useul apps into their simple music playing device.
From Whelton’s blog:
The springboard hack is just the removal of a app and creation of a blank space. Not that amazing, but whats important is the bypass of Nano’s cache comparison, which compares any modded SB file and reverts it if it doesn’t like it, this opens up the possibility of hacking and modding, while not adding bootloaders or any of that fun stuff.
Next is the discovery in some of the device’s plists of reference to support of Movies, TV Shows, Apps, Games, vCards, Calender events and so on, with a few other cool things like a passcode lock. With the bypass I figured out, I hope to enable these pretty soon. It seems like the OS is a rehashed version of the previous Nano’s OS.
Currently, Whelton plans to create a bootloader on the device to enhance the functionality of the Nano. This new hacks scene are very interesting to see. I know there are lot of iPod Nano users wondering what and how they can play with their device by injecting new features. Stay tuned.
