Apple are getting set to release their iOS 4.2 any day now and because of this there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. If you own an iPhone and know how to jailbreak and what it is involved you probably already know all of this but for new jailbreakers there are some mistakes that you could make that you really will regret.
The Dev Team have posted an update on their blog detailing what you can expect with the new iOS 4.2. They have also provided information on what to do and of course what not to do. I have taken the liberty of providing you with a quick summary below.
• The Dev Team have confirmed that all iOS firmwares can be jailbroken which is great news for idevice owners.
• The untethered status of a jailbreak depends mostly on Comex and the ability to extend it to iOS 4.2. So far in trials this has works on iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 beta 3. The Dev Team have also stated that there is good reason to believe that they will have an untethered 4.2 jailbreak available.
• There will also be an unlock for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS so if you own one of these devices and you want to unlock it you need to make sure that you don’t update it to iOS 4.2 when it is released until the Dev Team gives the green light to do so.
• So far the Dev Team have not been able to produce an unlock for the iPhone 4 on the iOS 4.2 but they have found a couple of holes and they are working on these. They will know more and be able to update everyone a little bit more after iOS 4.2 has been released. If you are one of the many who rely on an unlock for their iPhone 4, do not update it to iOS 4.2 until the Dev Team have announced an unlock solution.
These were the main points from the Dev Team blog post and as soon as they have any further information and updates you can be sure they will announce them. Until Apple release iOS 4.2 there really is very little that can be done but you can be sure that as soon as the launch goes live the Dev Team will be working hard to ensure that their unlock and jailbreak follows very quickly.
