Yesterday, the iPhone Dev-Team has released that updated version of Redsn0w jailbreak tool (version 0.9.6b3) which has a capability to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 GM running on all compatible iOS devices, such as the iPhone 4/3GS/3G, iPad, and iPod Touch 4G/3G/2G. The release also includes OpenSSH, OpenSSL, and the basic apt installer programs.

At the moment, the current public release of Cydia is not compatible with the recently launched iOS 4.2.1 GM but with OpenSSH and OpenSSL SSH bundle, developers/users will be able to install packages without Cydia through utilizing the tethered boot option in Redsn0w 0.9.6b3.

From the iPhone Dev Team blog:

“We’ve made some updates to redsn0w to make it easier for jailbreak developers (and tinkerers) to get their programs ready for 4.2.1. As noted in Update #2 above, the public version of Cydia (and MobileSubstrate too!) is not 4.2.1-compatible. redsn0w will now let you install your own custom bundles independent of Cydia (the bundle can actually be Cydia if you’ve compiled it on your own). These bundles can be up to 15MB in size, and should be in the form of a gzip-compressed tar file.”

"It’s very important that you get the file permissions and ownerships right in your custom redsn0w bundles. To give you a practical example of such a bundle, here’s one that includes OpenSSH, OpenSSL, and the basic apt installer programs:"

The instructions to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 GM on iPhone 4/3GS/3G and iPod Touch 4G/3G/2G with Redsn0w 0.9.6b3 are quite similar in the jailbreak tutorials posted here. Use this link to download SSH Bundle and Redsn0w 0.9.6b3 for Mac and Windows. Stay tuned for more jailbreak and iPhone news updates.
