Wi-Fi enabled iPhone 3GS debuted in China yesterday marking the introduction of a “China-specific” phone in its market. China Unicom disclosed that the Wi-Fi capable iPhone 3GS will be sold in 8-gig units.China Unicom is hoping that the arrival of WiFi on the iPhone 3GS will help booster iPhone sales in China and dramatically increase the device's popularity among its growing mobile population. iPhone 3GS in 16-gig and 32-gig units are still on sale but do not have Wi-Fi capability.
The iPhones popularity has not been of much help in increasing its China sales because of its price tag and the cost of 3G service.
Yahoo News reported that the WiFi-equipped iPhone sells for 4,999 yuan (738 dollars), which is the same price as the non-WiFi models. It noted that customers availing of a monthly subscription package amounting to at least 226 yuan can get the unit free.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the introduction of the WiFi capable iPhones came after China’s regulatory body approved the device’s frequency ranges in early May. The Chinese government apparently backed away from its stringent policy that outlawed the IEEE 802.11 Wi-Fi standard as a means for pushing its preferred WAPI standard.
Sources also reported that Apple and China Unicom are now finalizing a deal to bring the iPhone 4 and iPad to China. At present, no official announcements have been made to confirm this.
