Microsoft Offers 50% Price Cut for Office 2011 for Mac

Microsoft recently announced a jaw-dropping reduction to its recent edition of Office for Mac. The Office 2011 for Mac, slated for release in October, will cost 20 to 50 less than the Office 2008 edition.

Office 2011 comes in two editions - - Office for Mac Home and Student 2011 and Office for Mac Home and Business 2011.

A single license for the Office for Mac Home and Student 2011 will cost $119, and $149 for a family pack that will install three Macs. The single license for the 2008 edition was valued at $149.

A single license for Office for Mac Home and Business 2011 now cost $199 only, a $200 reduction from the $399 business version of Office 2008. Installation for two machines will only cost $279.

No explanation was provided for this dramatic price reduction but reports say this is likely due to the increasing popularity of Google’s slate of office productivity tools, including Google Docs. The Google tools are said to be gaining usage among small and large businesses.

In another light, Microsoft didn’t offer the same promotion for the June released Office 2010 for Windows. Office 2010 Professional’s single-license key card version is $349 - - a price that’s about $20 more than Office 2007 Professional’s upgrade price. The boxed version of Office 2010 Professional is even higher at $499.

It is hoped that the growing market for Google’s office productivity tools will eventually cause price reduction for the Office 2010. For now, it’s too early to tell how consumers will respond to this new offering.
