Apple’s head of iPhone and iPod engineering team has left the company. Mark Papermaster, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Devices Hardware Engineering, allegedly lost the confidence of Apple CEO Steve Jobs months ago.The Wall Street Journal reported that Papermaster has not been a part of Apple’s decision process for quite some time now. Sources also said that “Mr. Papermaster didn’t appear to have the type of creative thinking expected at Apple and wasn’t used to Apple’s corporate culture, where even senior executives are expected to keep on top of the smallest details of their areas of responsibility and often have to handle many tasks directly, as opposed to delegating them.”
To date, it is not clear whether Papermaster resigned from his post or was ousted from the company. He has been replaced by Bob Mansfield, who is an existing member of Apple's senior executive team.
Reports said Papermaster has not been seen in several important iPhone discussions despite the fact that he was head of iPhone’s hardware engineering. He was not in attendance during last month’s press conference on the “antennagate” issue and was not included in the promotional video released for the June launch of the iPhone 4.
It is not known whether Papermaster’s leaving is due to the highly publicized “death grip” issue. Reports have indicated that this iPhone problem was allegedly already known to Apple a year or two before the iPhone was launched but they still proceeded with its development.
However, the Wall Street Journal said it was Jobs’ decision to go ahead with the new antenna design, not Papermaster.
Papermaster started working for Apple in April of 2009. He was recruited to Apple from IBM in late 2008 to replace departing iPhone/iPod executive Tony Fadell.
