iPhone users who are currently under contract with AT&T are looking forward to change carriers if the iPhone and Verizon deal push through.

A Morpace.com survey conducted among 1,000 customers showed that 23 percent of current AT&T subscribers are interested to switch to Verizon for their iPhone plan. The survey also indicated that about 47 percent of them will consider switching to Verizon, while another 34 percent said they are waiting for another carrier before upgrading their iPhones.

Verizon customers showed loyalty to the carrier with 51 percent of them willing to stay but may consider buying an iPhone if it becomes available. This could mean a stiff competition with other smartphones currently under contract with Verizon, like Blackberry and Android.

Recent speculations indicate that the iPhone-Verizon tie may likely happen in January of next year as AT&T’s exclusive hold on the iPhone nears its end.

It would be recalled that AT&T recently filed its Financial Statements with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). AT&T was also quoted saying: “As these exclusivity arrangements end, we expect to continue to offer such handsets, and we believe our service plan offerings will help to retain our customers by providing incentives not to move to a new carrier."

Speculators believe that this is a significant indicator that “AT&T may soon break its exclusive grip on several hugely popular smartphones” although no specific smartphone was mentioned. AT&T has been the sole carrier of iPhones since its launch in 2007 and signed a deal with Apple for a 5-year exclusivity agreement.
