iPhone 3G Experiences Slow Down with iOS 4

Numerous posts in Apple’s Tech Support forum suggest that many are not happy with their upgrade to iOS 4 in their iPhone 3Gs. Most of the comments in the said forum point to the fact that the upgrade to iOS 4 greatly slowed down a lot of features.One user commented that the upgrade to iOS 4 may be a success but observed that “new applications, such as the iBook application, is very slow, (and) doesn't respond smooth on screentaps, etc.” He added that the “iOS4 doesn't add anything to improve the user experience on the iPhone 3G and it would be better to go back using the 3.1.3 version.
Another complained that his visual mail is not working, aside from physical problems on the 3G like heating and battery loss, among others. SMS app has also “become slower especially when sending a message, the text-bubble doesn't smoothly animate to go to the SMS thread.” This iPhone 3G user believes the SMS problem is due to the newly added spell checker which uses additional RAM.
These complaints are further aggravated by still another user who sounded very angry, lamenting that: “All my songs in my iPhone has lyrics on it (i put them one by one), and now they're gone!!! The same user also noted that the Notepad icon looks crumpled just below the brown bar and that the “iBooks is sooo slow... turning pages doesn't respond sometimes.”
Experts believed that the “slow down” is due to an obvious difference in performance due to different computing powers. They mentioned that the iPhone 3G is riding on a 412MHz ARM 11 chip, while the processor of 3GS model runs at 600MHz. They also noted that 3GS does not experience the same problem.
Some recommended that a double hard-reset can improve the performance, or if this doesn’t work, the best thing is to downgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.3.

How do you downgrade the software. All of my applications are now very slow. Not enjoyable to use the Iphone anymore
