A mid-level Apple manager was arrested for allegedly selling Apple business secrets to Asian suppliers. The San Jose Mercury News reported that Paul Shin Devine will be indicted for wire fraud, money laundering and kickbacks.
Devine is a global supply manager for Apple and allegedly worked with an Andrew Ang of Singapore. The two were charged and named in a 23-count federal grand jury.
Apple has also filed a separate civil suit alleging that Devine
accepted more than $1 million in “payments, kickbacks and bribes” over a number of years.
Apple spokesman Steve Dowling was quoted saying:
“Apple is committed to the highest ethical standards in the way we do business. We have zero tolerance for dishonest behavior inside or outside the company.”
The indictment highlights how Devine used his position at Apple to gain access to future products being developed by the company. Mercury News said “Devine would share information about these products to Asian manufacturers and suppliers, enabling them to negotiate better contracts, whilst receiving money and kickbacks in return.”
Devine allegedly made deals with Apple iPhone and iPod material suppliers from China, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.
Devine is currently being held by the U.S Marshals Service and will appear in a San Jose court on Monday.
