Apple Files Patent for a Replica of “Where To?” App

Apple has filed a patent application for a travel app whose design is the exact copy of an app developed by a third party for its Apple App Store. Apple’s design is the exact image of Where To?, an app that enables users to locate steakhouses, bank branches, repair shops, and airports, among others.

Where To? was developed by Futuretap and has been available in the App store for years now. There have been no reports if Apple contacted Futuretap to let them know of the design’s use, including its name.

Futuretap, for its part stated that they do not have any deals in place with Apple for the patent, to quote:

“We’re faced with a situation where we’ve to fear that our primary business partner is trying to ‘steal’ our idea and design. So how to deal with that? As some of you know, we’ve always been more than grateful for the platform Apple created. And, in fact, still are. However, we can’t ignore it if the number one recognition value of our (currently) only app potentially is under fire.”

Apple’s patent is dated December 18, 2009 and describes “systems and methods for integrating travel services in a single application available to a portable electronic device,” allowing users to easily be directed to local restaurants, banks or nightspots.

Apple has not provided any explanation yet. Observers commented that this “practice” sends a very negative message to its developers where it seems to claim ownership or stewardship of applications submitted to its App Store.
