The smartphones and mobile phones industry has grown in leaps and bounds, and still growing! Industry analysts say it is bigger than the computer industry ever was. Popular brands Blackberry, iPhone, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, etc. report high sales left and right. However, nothing seems to compare to the latest achievement of smartphones powered by Android. Nielsen and Canalys recently reported that Android has topped the US smartphone market with its 886% growth in the second quarter of 2010.
The reports indicate that Android phones are way ahead its other smartphone competitors. Its reach across smartphone manufacturers HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG, among others, is the key to the growth of its sales and shipments outside the US.
Canalys said, “Android devices collectively represented a 34% share of the US market in the quarter, and with growth of 851%, Android became the largest smart phone platform in the country.”
Android phones are also targeting the China market which is the second biggest smartphone market in the second quarter of 2010 for the sixth consecutive quarter. Canalys added that around 6.9 million smartphones were shipped to China alone, representing 11% of the worldwide total, and that “Android devices combined reached almost 475,000 units (in the said quarter) from no presence in the country a year ago.”
At present, billions of smartphones are sold annually. This number is continuously growing and is in fact, greater than half of the human population.
