Finally, does Apple iPhone have a real competitor now in the smartphone market? And, crafting business strategies to take on the mighty and popular iPhone is none other than Google Nexus. Google has eventually confirmed its foray into the hardware market by launching its own smartphone device. According to confirmed sources, the Nexus One has been tailormade to Google's specifications by a Taiwanese firm HTC. Although, it is too early to come to a conclusion about the prospects of Google taking on Apple, it has after all created quite a buzz about a possible head-to-head contest between the two technological giants.
Coming to Google’s antecedents in the smartphone market, the expectations are riding high as it is already running the latest version of Google's Android software, including ones made by HTC and Motorola.
Will Google Nexus One be a nemesis for Apple iPhone?
Well, this question will require time to be answered. As per initial reviews, Google Nexus may not have come at par with the brilliantly developed Apple iPhone; however, it does have some good features like
- A powerful processor chip confers the Nexus One some advanced capabilities, most notably high-definition 720p video playback and the ability to run more than one application at a time;
- A much higher resolution 3.7-inch screen than that of the iPhone;
- Turn-by-turn navigation with Street View so that you can spot your destination;
- Voice recognition software,
- Nexus One has a unibody design, which besides giving it a more ‘Apple-like’ look, gives the phone more structural rigidity and protection from the elements.
- Nexus One is built-in with a dual microphone that cancels background noise achieved via an audio voice processor chip from Audience Semiconductor.
- The Nexus One's has a MicroSD card which only holds 4GB, compared to 16GB on the Droid or the iPhone. It has been considered that Google chose this to keep costs low; however, unlike the iPhone, there is the option to switch out the SD card for a larger one.
A few early limitations…..
However, there has been a few noticeable limitations like the case of its
- Relatively small number of downloadable apps and very little memory for storing them;
- No simple way of transferring music files to the device;
- The high-resolution screen appears to rather lose its attraction due to the fact that it doesn't support "multi-touch" interactions (just as the Apple iPhone).
Google Nexus One may not be in for competition….
Any person who has been following Google over the years must be knowing that Google will never make a deliberate attempt to offer a product inferior in technology or quality to its customers. If you think rationally, you’ll see that Google has been consistently over the years of its existence followed a military strategy in its business policies - the first law of which is to always decline combat on territory dominated by your enemy and fight only on ground where you have the advantage.
Analysts opine that its smartphone strategy is also centered around its understanding of the fact that it will not be so easy a job to foray into Apple’s iPhone terrain. A company as smart as Google does very well recognize that it will not be so easy to master the functional elegance of the iPhone at this juncture – which in fact comes from having total control of both the hardware and its software.
