MobileMe’s Find My iPhoneAll iPhone users will agree in unison that the device and the technology Apple has been instilling in it over the years have made life easier than never before.

From shopping, to reading books and newspapers to locating destinations, iPhone apps are no less than wizards who can just cook up comfort with technology. One of iPhone app’s latest features that is no less than a technological renaissance is Find My iPhone feature in MobileMe.

The developers of ‘Find My iPhone’ least anticipated that the feature they have developed for MobileMe with the intention that it could help in finding a lost phone, could also nab criminals. In a few recent incidents of iPhone theft and related robberies, the ‘Find My iPhone’ feature has been pivotal in nabbing quite a few thieves and robbers.

How it works

Find My iPhone’ is one of the new features Apple has launched with iPhone OS 3.0. This feature which helps you locate your phone on a map works with MobileMe (earlier known as .Mac). The feature besides allowing playing a sound, even allows you to display a text message (even if the phone is locked). It also allows you to wipe your iPhone remotely by just pressing the tab 'Remote Wipe'.

If you have a MobileMe account, all you have to do is login and setup the ‘Find My iPhone’ feature. Since it uses the iPhone’s GPS tracking feature, all you need to do is turn on in Settings. Interestingly, this feature works for iPod Touch too. The basic requirement is that the iPod Touch has to be connected to a WiFi network.

Fair deal for iPhone security

The Find My iPhone feature on MobileMe application can be availed for $99 a year after taking up a 60 day trial. Experts believe this $99 a year to be a fair deal considering the MobileMe package it comes with including Find My iPhone feature, email/calendar sync, photo gallery space, and iDisk online backup.

Limitation

Find My iPhone feature for MobileMe however has one limitation as of now. The feature is inaccessible if the iPhone is switched off. Therefore, in case your iPhone is stolen and the person who has stolen it is witty enough to switch off the device, then you will not be able to tap the benefits of Find My iPhone feature.
It can be anticipated that Apple will take note of this and make the iPhone traceable even when switched off for future versions. That will for sure act as a deterrent for criminals to even steal the iPhone in the first place.

Positive feedback for ‘Find My iPhone’

There has been encouraging news from various quarters in the United States of thieves being nabbed and robberies being fouled – thanks to the Find My iPhone feature on MobileMe.
