iPhone 3G S Jailbreak ‘Redsn0w’ Finally Arrives

The iPhone Dev team finally releases RedSn0w – the new version tool that can jailbreak the new Apple iPhone 3GS. Even though, the jailbreak news of the iPhone 3G S has been making the rounds since its launch in mid June, industry sources believe, a number of reasons held back the release. However, now the iPhone Dev Team has announced the release of both ultrasn0w and redsn0w, which respectively handle both halves of hacking an iPhone 3G S for unlocking and jailbreaking.

This can indeed be considered a reciprocate development from the iPhone Dev Team quickly on the heels of the first jailbreaking news of ‘purplera1n’ the jailbreak tool released last week by 20-year-old George Hotz. Purplera1n created quite a splash as it almost made an unexpected entry while the whole world was awaiting iPhone 3GS jailbreak news from the (unofficial) iPhone dev team. While Purplera1n offered jailbreaking solution for iPhone 3G S, the iPhone Dev Team came up with solutions for both iPhone 3G S unlock and jailbreak.

Moreover, while Purplera1n was made available first in Windows version and then also in Mac version, the redsn0w 0.8 tool from iPhone-Dev team is available even for Linux platform. This is indeed considered to be a significant development.

Why it took so long….

This seems to be the inevitable question, why it took so long for the dev team to release the jailbreaking tool. Well, there are several theories doing the rounds; while we try to pick up some of the most prominent ones. It is true Purplera1n did play a major role in the announcement for release of the redsn0w tool. It was only after the release of Purplera1n, that the iPhone-Dev Team came up with the same redsn0w tool used to jailbreak iPhone OS devices running iPhone OS 3.0 software update for accomplishing the iPhone 3GS jailbreak.

A few dos and don’ts

The iPhone-Dev Team has specifically intimidated iPhone users about the adversities of upgrading the respective baseband; because, you cannot downgrade baseband version once it is upgraded. Therefore, it is recommended that you use the iPhone Dev team tools to update the iPhone 3GS firmware - without updating the baseband.

Moreover, the Dev Team has further cautioned ultrasn0w users availing any unlocking technique to avoid installing future Apple firmware, as it will overwrite baseband hacks. If done, affected iPhones cannot be unlocked again until another exploit is developed. There are also reports about a possible bug in ultrasn0w, which is promised a fix for an unspecified date.
