Unlock iPhone, Jailbreak iPhone and iPhone Unlocking

It would be so simple..

Nokia acquired Symbian willing to opensource it.
Openmoko is readying the open phone.
Now I know Apple will never listen to this,
but with a simple move Apple could wipe all
competitors off the smartphone scene.
One of my favourite quotes is:
"Freedom is not 'choosing between black and white',
but to avoid such predetermined choice."
There are only a few slight adjustments to
Apple's plans needed to own the market.
Too bad they don't really seem
interested to listen.

interesting post...

I think the answer is that by open sourcing the iPhone they would not be able to keep the kind of contract they have with the carriers.

However until now I don't understand why they have this kind of contract...

Are they receiving too much money with that? Are they receiving too much money by only accepting the applications they develop or that they sign as good?

I don't know... Definitely the other PDA/cellphones would be in a bad situation if the iPhone was open source or at least not so closed on itself as the OS running seems to have much more power than it shows...

Damn... I still gotta wait for my 3G iPhone :(

That is a GREAT quote!

i agree with absolut marvila on all three turns. the iPhone OS definitely has more power than it shows, by making iPhone open source, they wouldn't be able to keep the contract with AT-T, and i am still wating for that damn 3G iPhone to ship.

Yes, that's the big tragedy about Apple everyone is complaining about. People wonder what forced them to sign up for such a ridiculous contract.

Maybe it was Steve Jobs obsession with providing the user experience or look-n-feel EXACTLY the way he wants it. So for instance if they wanted a carrier to provide visual voicemail and AT&T came along and said "We'll provide it only if you sell your phones exclusively through us!" and that would've left Steve Jobs in a difficult situation finally signing up for the contract.

Other factor may be the sheer support task associated with providing an unlocked iPhone for use with ANY carrier. Can you imagine the types of complains, returns and support request they would be bombarded with if it wasn't for such a tightly controlled contract.

When the iPhone came out it was the first device of its kind. Apple would be rightfully doubtful as to how successful it would be. In order to mitigate the risk it would certainly make sense to establish a strong partnership with a carrier and that way tightly control how the device is used and thus guarantee that the device would work within the well-defined constraints.

"Why would Apple make such a 'stupid' move??" is I think a comment made from hindsight (now that it is so successfully used with multiple carriers, thanks to master hackers like Zibri!).

You didn't seem interested to discuss it...

hzink:
I am always interested.

It wouldnt sound so 'stupid' if you are stakeholders from Apple, I think. Say if they speculate iphone is going to make a stance in the mobile market, they would invest strongly in a targeted carrier, ie. AT&T, so that their investment returns are not just from Apple Corp but also the associated. Thats what I think.....

Hi zibri, im Creekz, if you still remember me, i was one of the helper in irc channel #ziphone #iphone who dislike donations, however i was in heptic time thats why, my access as +voice was remove from the Funny kinky bot of yours :) ..

anyway, i want to ask if ever the 3g firmware is unlock and can be activated, does it work in all network? like here in philippines the 3g iphone will be release on august or sept.

since you posted the beta 7 firmware and gladly you unlock and patch it. my question is if my country is not listed in that version, can i still unlock and activate in my country?

this is my second comment, but I can't help noticing that on quite a few websites there have been criticisms about your method of jailbreaking and downgrading the bootloaders.
Does downgrading to 3.9b really decrease the battery life or is it just coincidence? I don't want to be convinced by some Ziphone haters that I should turn to the dark side. LOL
I believe in your deeds, Zibri!

Hey,
I heard about the bootloaders to but winpwn or pwnage tool can upgrade it back to 4.6 so it is reversible. But to be honest winpwn is complicated, ziphone is soo much easier. I hope 2.0 will also be a 1-click unlock like now. Keep up the good work zibri!!

I'm just kindof confused as to why they are making you sign a contract before you can get the phone... They have to be loseing so much money that way. I'm sure the majority of iPhones sold were unlocked for other networks(correct me if im wrong.) I have T-Mobile(us) and im under my contract until August 15, 09. I thin the only way i can get one is to get my mom(who is a ATT customer) to sign her contract for 2 more years so i can get one but then she gets screwed over when it comes around to her needing a new phone. Is there any other way that i can go about this.

If ANYONE has any comment please e-mail me.

aple wants to have as much control over the iphone osX as possible...

it's a compromise between iphone security and openness to the developers... as long as we can hack the iphone/ipod touch and run3rd party apps i don't really care!

if apple would close all loopholes i would get really pissed... but as long as you (zibri) and others can manage to hack the iphone osX, and as long as there's no viruses out there i'm also fine with it...

i like the picture god damn she hot

Hey guys, in Australia the mobile phone companies are not allowed to keep your phone locked to a network ONCE YOU REQUEST TO UNLOCK! :)

I believe the iPhone will be made available for purchase "outright" (free from contracts) on july 11. Yippee!

Hey Zibri-

YOU ROCK!!!

Cheers,

Pez

hey something off the topic..

a website named ziphoneplus.com is selling your software at the price of 29$!!!!

Foolishly I decided to upgrade my iphone to v2. Now it's not working. I have spent hours trying to bring back my beloved from the dead. Ziphone v3 is not working. Is there anyway you can put a link to older versions?
I have donated once to you as you are the man.

I need some help guys... I hooked up my iPhone to ZiPhone 3.0 and plugged into the USB port and selected the option "One Click Actions" and the progress log states: Checking ZiPhone integrity i386... Searching for iPhone....

But it never finds my phone after being hooked up for 20+ minutes.. I even rebooted my MacPro and loaded the software back up and it still doesn't recognize the phone being there. Any help would be appreciated!!!

thanks a lot!:D

Just unlocked my iTouch - it was a lot easier than I had imagined. -and comforting to see a familiar ssh login. Great job with this app!

One question, is there any way to use the usb cable when I don't have access to my wireless access point?
